Whether they are writing about a specific artifact featured in the exhibition, or a local BION (a Believe It or Not! fact), The Science of Ripley's Believe it or Not! offers an endless variety of odd and amazing stories to share!

Keep in mind local, national and international events that may be linked to the exhibition. Find a way to capitalize on unbelievable stories that may be making headlines, or incorporate your attraction into planned events such as World Sword Swallowers Day! The traditional "Big Swallow" is scheduled to take place on the last Saturday in February each year.

    Topics may include:

    • Sword Swallowing – How is this possible?
    • Entomophagy – The pros and cons of eating insects
    • Extreme Biology – Highlight cases of extreme biology including Titanoboa, megalodon shark, Robert Wadlow, etc.
    • Shrunken Heads – How it was done and why
    • Body Modification – Aesthetically pleasing or harmful to the body?
    • Wonders of the Natural World – Highlight stories of our weird world such as exploding killer lakes, the seven natural wonders of the world
    • Local BIONs – Write an article about the Believe It or Not!® stories in your community.
    • Robert Ripley – Write an article about his life and legacy.

Exhibitors have the opportunity to work with Ripley Entertainment Inc. to create a Ripley's Believe It or Not! (BION) cartoon to run on a specific day (i.e., the day the exhibit launches in your community, a special event that you are hosting, etc.). To take advantage of this opportunity, you will need to:

    1. Research your special BION
    2. Verify the facts (with published reports, credible online sources, etc)
    3. Provide several photos on which the Ripley's cartoonist will base the cartoon
    4. Submit your request to Ripley Entertainment Inc. with a minimum of 6 months from the preferred date

Please note: Ripley Entertainment will have final say as to whether or not the content is suitable for a cartoon.

Exhibitors also have the opportunity to work with Ripley Entertainment Inc. to access other artifacts/objects from their collection to augment their visitor experience. This could be a targeted approach where artifacts are only from your city or state, or from a specific theme. Exhibitors will be responsible for the inbound and outbound shipping (Orlando, FL) and insurance for these items. A great way to enhance your lobby or increase the size of this 6000 sf exhibit! Please contact Science North to get the appropriate contact person at Ripley Entertainment Inc. for further information about this opportunity to access their 'vault' of artifacts.

The "Ripley's in Your Neighborhood" exhibit includes a bulletin board and display case for Exhibitors to showcase locally-themed Ripley's Believe It or Not! cartoons, stories, specimens and artifacts if you wish. For Exhibitors who do not wish to create a customized display, a set of miscellaneous Ripley cartoons for the bulletin board are provided as part of the traveling exhibit; the display case is optional and does not have to be used.

Below are details to assist you with planning your own displays for the bulletin board and display case:

    • The bulletin board has a display area approximately 40 inches wide by 30 inches high (visible area). It has a metal backer so magnets should be used to hold papers in place (no tacks or pins, please!).
    • If you wish to display Ripley's Believe It or Not! cartoons featuring your city or region, contact the primary contact person at Ripley Entertainment Inc. with your specific request. Ripley's will search their database and, if appropriate BION cartoons have been published, will provide you with digital PDF files of the artwork for you to print and post. Your Science North contact can provide coordinates for the appropriate person at Ripley Entertainment Inc.
    • You could use the bulletin board to feature local Believe It or Not! type stories (e.g., newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, etc.)
    • The optional display case has a flat surface approximately 21 inches square with a protective glass cover about 16 inches high.
    • You could display local or regional artifacts and objects related to BIONs, or perhaps artifacts obtained from Ripley's to augment the visitor experience (see section above for information about loans from Ripley Entertainment Inc.).
    • Alternatively, the display case could feature small 3D artworks or other objects related to contests and challenges that are part of your marketing campaign for the Exhibit.

    Vice President, Exhibits and Archives

Edward Meyer has served as Curator of the Ripley collection since 1978, acquiring more than 10,000 amazing artifacts. He has contributed to more than 50 Believe It or Not! books, nearly 100 museum films, and more than 100 episodes of branded television. Mr. Meyer has extensive television and radio interview experience and ironically, has been collecting Believe It or Not!s longer than Robert Ripley himself!
    Orlando, Florida

John Graziano is only the 5th Ripley Cartoonist to regularly draw the daily strip since Robert Ripley laid down his pen in 1949. John Graziano took over the drawing boards in 2004, it proved to be a tough job for Graziano to acquire. In fact, it took Graziano 25 years to land the job. Growing up he studied Ripley's Believe It or Not! cartoons in his daily newspaper and in 1979, at the age of 15, Graziano heard a search was underway for a new cartoonist and inquired. He was turned down with a polite, "no" but continued drawing and his passion for Ripley cartoons never changed. In early 2004, Graziano applied again and with an application dated 25 years after the original, finally landed the job. Believe It or Not!
    Orlando, Florida

Note: Both Edward Meyer and John Graziano are available through Ripley Entertainment. There is no charge for speaker fees, but exhibitors will be responsible for all travel costs.

Together they form the Lucky Daredevil Thrill Show and are veteran sideshow performers. Between them, they perform all the classic sideshow acts. Both swallow swords and are blockheads. One of their most thrilling bits happens when Tyler uses a chain saw to carve a pumpkin that is sitting on Jill's stomach – as she lies on a bed of nails! Jill can also perform with a huge yellow python.
    Located in Harper's Ferry, WV

Dan Meyer is the best-known sword swallower in the world. He is an Ig Nobel Prize winner at Harvard University and has traveled the world lecturing at Science Conferences and universities on his award winning research - "The long term effect of sword swallowing." Dan does many of the traditional sideshow acts including blockhead and juggling, and he not only swallows swords, but hedge trimmers, machetes, and car axles. He also became the first person in North America to swallow a sword under water – at the Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach.
    Michigan City, Indiana

Todd Robbins is considered the current patriarch of contemporary sideshow entertainers. He has taught the sideshow arts at Coney Island and has performed as a circus ringmaster, a circus clown, has written a play and starred in it on Off-Broadway, been in movies, and is a professional piano player often sitting in with Woody Allen's group.. He can do virtually any act, and he holds the record for eating the most glass light bulbs – nearly 5,000 and counting.
    New York, NY

Harley Newman is the other grand gentleman of the sideshow arts. He is a teacher who owns the sideshow school, Oddity University. He performs all of the traditional sideshow acts and specializes in escape acts. He is also the inventor of the barbed wire bed (similar to a bed of nails, but made of barbed wire instead), and was featured on a Ripley TV show years ago supporting all his weight on one large nail.

Sideshow Bennie is an overweight sideshow entertainer whose acts are considered "edgy". He has an adult version of his act but is very good at adapting it to the family audience. He has a dartboard tattooed on his back and invites people to come up on stage and throw (real!) darts at him. He also specializes in the "Human Bulletin Board" upon which people staple objects using a real staple gun onto his bare skin. Usually he requests that people staple money upon him. With $1 bill you can staple upon his stomach or arms. A $5 gets his back, a $10 gets his face, and a $20 will get you... well you get the idea.
    Goodlettsville, TN

Swami Yomahmi calls himself the original sideshow nerd and is costumed appropriately! He does all sideshow acts, but also is very funny in his gaffs (fakes) of sideshow acts that will always bring a fun, lighter side to the overall performance. He has performed daily at the Myrtle Beach Believe It or Not! Odditorium for the last five summers as the outside talker.
    Washington, DC

Erik Sprague, also known as The Lizardman, is a freak show and sideshow performer, best known for his body modification, including his sharpened teeth, full-body tattoo of green scales, bifurcated tongue, subdermal implants and green-inked lips. He has mastered and regularly performs many classic sideshow acts such as the human blockhead, fire eating and breathing, gavage, sword swallowing, the bed of nails, the Human Dartboard, and the insectivore. The Lizardman was a Ph.D. candidate at the University at Albany before beginning his transformation.
    Austin, Texas

Willard Wigan began his artistic life at a tender age, creating art of such minute proportions that it virtually could not be seen with the naked eye. "It began when I was five years old," says Willard. "I started making houses for ants because I thought they needed somewhere to live. Then I made them shoes and hats." Willard's micro-sculptures are now so minute that they are only visible through a microscope. Each piece commonly sits within the eye of a needle, or on a pinhead. Willard enters a meditative state in which his heartbeat is slowed, allowing him to reduce hand tremors and sculpt between pulse beats. Even the reverberation caused by outside traffic can affect Willard's work. Consequently, he often works through the night when there is minimal disruption.
    Birminghan, UK

Knotty Bits, LLC presents specialty unique entertainment, specializing in circus and sideshow, bringing you world-renowned acts that are both fun and professional. Full length shows, individual acts or roaming / atmospheric entertainment available.
    Grand Rapids, MI

Based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, A2D2 Aerial Dance Cirque Co. is a customized entertainment and events service dedicated to the creation of unique entertainment solutions for each individual client. A2D2 services include high-flying aerial acts, breathtaking floor-shows, Juno-Award winning musical entertainment, laugh-out-loud dinner theatre shows and full-length productions.
    Mississauga, ON

Circus Orange is a unique hybrid entertainment organization. They are both a live action performance company and a full-service supplier of pyrotechnics, special effects, stunts and rigging with the ability to combine these complimentary elements so intimately that the line between performance and technology blurs leaving your audience with a pure entertainment experience. They have built their brand on the tight integration of circus, dance, acting and aerial arts with fire, pyrotechnics and special effects with four large-scale touring productions that they call spectacle performances. These theatrical shows range from 25-70 minutes in length and smaller shows and show components are available stand-alone products.
    Jerseyville, ON

A professor of global health at Sweden's Karolinska Institute, Dr. Rosling's current work focuses on dispelling common myths about the so-called developing world, which (he points out) is no longer worlds away from the West. Guaranteed: You've never seen data presented like this. By any logic, a presentation that tracks global health and poverty trends should be, in a word: boring. But in Rosling's hands, data sings. Rosling is also a sword swallower, as demonstrated in the final moments of his second talk at the TED conference.

Carl Zimmer is a perfect fit as a guest science speaker. In his most recent book Science Ink, Carl posed a question on his blog: are scientists hiding tattoos of their science? It turned out that many of them were, and they were willing to share their ink with him and the world. In Science Ink, he assembles his favorite images from his blog, along with previously unpublished ones, and writes about the science behind the pictures, and the scientists behind the science.
    New York, NY

The Gazillion Bubble Show will amaze your guests with mind-blowing bubble magic, with a science twist. Step into an interactive bubble world and be dazzled by spellbinding lasers, spectacular lighting effects, and jaw-dropping masterpieces of bubble artistry.
